Biographical sketch
I have been a lifelong resident of Ocean Springs, MS and have a long legacy of seafood in my “Seymour” family. In 1957 my parents purchased my grandparents stuffed crab business which they had operated it since 1910. My parents then successfully owned and operated J&L Seafood, named after my parents, John & Lydia Seymour. My dad had over 200+ crab pots which he set and checked daily. He brought crabs home where he cooked and cleaned them and had 6 ladies who picked the meat which was then used in our famous stuffed crabs which were delivered weekly during the sixties to large hotels and small mom & pop grocery businesses all along the Biloxi Beach. This lasted until August 17, 1969 when Hurricane Camille devastated the MS Gulf Coast. In 2015 my parents and their business were inducted into the Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum Heritage Hall of Fame after my nomination was accepted. In 2019, I nominated my grandparents and their business and they were inducted into the Hall of Fame as well. Over the years, my love of seafood and pride of the heritage I so enjoy have led me to collect many, many family recipes, but none more special than the stuffed crab recipe which was the one for the family business and which my siblings and I promised my mom and dad we would never give out. I also hold the honor of First Place Winner for Best Seafood Gumbo at the Biloxi Seafood Festival on September 27, 1986 and again on September 24, 1988. I previously belonged to a Gourmet Cooking Club of 8 couples for about 10 years and still have all of those recipes. Besides cooking, I most enjoy spending lots of time with my daughter and her husband, my granddaughter and my siblings and I still cook every chance I get.
